Chapter 22

Tregr led me deeper into the castle—up flights of stairs, down corridors, and through arched doorways, until I was sure we were lost. But I was still worked up from having turned down the advances of an actual prince, so I was glad for the walk. Finally, we stood in front of double doors that were guarded by armored statues. One door was slightly open.

Tregr motioned to the open door. “Wait in here. I’ll go find Roah and let him know you’re expecting him. I trust you’ll stay put until one of us comes back for you, and I won’t need to find a babysitter to keep you out of trouble.”

“Tregr, have I ever done anything that would make you think you need to watch my every move?” As I asked, a flurry of emotions played over his expression. I felt guilty and smiled, quickly adding, “Don’t answer that. I’ll stay right here. No babysitter needed.”

“Good. For a minute there I thought I was going to have to chain you to a chair.” He chuckled darkly. He was serious. “I’ll be back with Roah soon.”

“Thanks, Tregr,” I said as I walked through the door.

His footsteps faded as I looked around the room. Not only was it enormous, but it was daunting in so many glorious ways. I took off my mask and wandered over to a writing desk with all sorts of papers and quills on it.

I ran my fingers over the feathers of the quills and the wax used to seal documents. The desk sat against a wall lined with shelves that held books, scrolls, small statues, wooden chests with locks, and many other items that I wasn’t sure what their uses were. I looked at every detail, touched everything that begged to be examined, and was awed by every facet.

Tyler would freak out to be in a room like this, I thought. It was possibly the coolest place I’d ever been.

The fireplace on the opposite end had a large shield hanging over it, engraved with a symbol I’d recognized from Grandpa’s journals. Two swords stuck out from under its edges. A dark fur rug sat at the feet of several leather chairs close to the glowing flames.

A very large table dominated the center of the room. I was in heaven as I looked over all the objects it held, my inner Ren-geek in ecstasy. There were crossbows in various sizes, daggers, swords with different types of blades, and weapons I had no idea how to use, let alone what to call them—but I loved them all.

It looked like the heavily laden shelves against the walls had spilled several books onto the table as well. Some had been opened to places that talked about survival techniques, history, battle strategies, and something about Sages written in the trick font. That book intrigued me most. I’d heard that word before—Sages—and while I was sure that Ayla had introduced me to one, and my escort at the party had been one, I knew nothing about them.
